We retired our flag this past weekend. There is a flag pole near the lake that Fred's family installed many years ago. To his knowledge, when they were here, there was always an American Flag flying in the breeze.
The most current flag was the one that laid on his father's casket, and we have flown it for about 4 years. That flag is retired and we have a new one.
I learned a little about the American flag this past week.
The United States Flag, adopted in June 14, 1777 is the fourth oldest national flag in the world. Denmark's flag, adopted in 1219 is the oldest.
A flag expert is called a vexillologist.
When I was in grade school, every morning, the 6th grade class was in charge of raising the flag for the day. It was a real honor to be chosen as the student to be the one to raise the flag. Also, at the end of the day, another two 6th grade students were charged with the task of taking the flag in for the night, and were instructed as to the proper way of folding the American Flag.
Those mornings, the entire school gathered around the flag pole, and recited the Pledge of Allegiance.
Do grade school children still do this, and if not, when did this tradition end?
With few memories of my grade school days, this one remains.
