Permanent

I'd just arrived at my office at the City of Lake Elmo. It was sunny and a pleasant day. Chuck Dillerud, the City Planner and also my supervisor was in the Council Chambers having a cup of coffee and watching the morning news on one of the monitors, as he usually did in the early time before City Hall opened at 8 bells.

Sharon Lumby, the City Clerk was at her desk, and the Administrator was in her office.

I popped into chambers to say good morning to Chuck and we exchanged some small talk as we absentmindedly watched the Today Show on NBC.

Then, it happened.

There are certain events in everyone's lives that are permanently imprinted in hearts and minds. Births, deaths, joyous and exciting moments.

Some are: remembering my newborn sister, Wendy lying on the basinette table in the kitchen of our pink house on 3rd Street in North St. Paul; in 5th grade when President Kennedy was murdered; that Sunday when the Beatles appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show; the day John Lennon was killed in New York City; seeing Paul McCartney live in Ames, Iowa; the births of Ryan and Nathan; the diagnoses of Ryan and Nathan; Ryan and Jessica's wedding; meeting Olivia for the first time; Gramma, Mom, Uncle Jamesy, losing pets and finding new ones. Marrying Fred. Cherishing what life brings our way, and trying to understand the why's of the ones that hurt.

and, today...for millions, 911.

I was working in the Cafeteria at Andersens and Roger Meyer came in and said that he heard on the radio that a plane had just the WTC. All the women working were saying "It must have been an accident". I knew in my heart it wasn't. Then, news of another plane. We did not have a TV, so we listened all day to the radio. Nothing could have prepared any of us for what we would all see on TV later that day, played over and over. It still plays over and over in my mind when I think of that day. Such a sad day for this country.
