Song of the Week - Carpenters: Bless the Beasts and the Children

My heart is back on track. This is a special song to me; my dear friend Dan Libby died of liver failure in Key Largo, Florida over 15 years ago. Dan was a gay man tortured by a cruel society that caused him to seek alcohol as a way to cope with the pain and heartache of "not fitting in". A tragic and unnecessary loss. He was so dear! As his family scattered his ashes in the Gulf of Mexico, the lyrics to this song were read in his honor. Dan loved all animals, and was a champion and advocate for the humane treatment of dogs, cats and horses. We spent countless hours together, and he loved my children and all our pets, as well. He was with us the night our mare foaled, and the thought evokes a smile as we were all in the barn pacing like soon to be fathers in a maternity ward waiting room!

So, if you think it's sappy, so it goes. The lyrics are very touching, and Karen Carpenter had the voice of an angel.

So Dan, this is for you. I miss you.
