So, here's the deal...I was watching Oprah today (which I RARELY DO) and her entire show was dedicated to dogs. Nice...very nice.
There was a great deal of emphasis placed upon folks thinking about getting a dog, and I concur, go to a shelter and adopt. NO PET STORES.
Also, it was encouraging to learn that over 2,000 puppies and adult dogs have been spared tremendous pain and suffering due to changes folks have made in how they think and behave concerning pets and animals in general. All rescued from puppy mills.
Once again, the Amish community to some extent have not truly accepted the idea that dogs are to be treated as pets and part of the family rather than a commodity. I was saddened to learn that rather than get proper veterinary care for their 80 dogs, two Amish brothers in Berkshire County, PA chose to assassinate the sick dogs by shooting them while they cowered in the cages. At this writing, no charges have been filed because there is no law against this practice.
An aside to this story, I was reading an advertisement for Amish made "miracle" heaters in the back section of a recent National Geographic magazine (October 2008 between pages 139 and 140). The ad proclaims the fire less flame looks so real it fools everyone but there is no real fire. That makes it safe to touch. And...HERE'S the really appalling part of this two-page spread...there's a picture of a baby, mom and child and a Golden Retriever laying in front of this heater and the caption reads," It's where the kids will play and the cat and dog will sleep." All I can say is this...BASTARDS. Lying bastards!!!
