Making A Change

Fred and I have talked many times about making a major change in our lives by choosing to become vegetarians. As the weeks and days pass, I find myself more and more interested in doing so for two reasons. First, I truly believe it is a much healthier way to eat. That, and staying away from white flour and white sugar. One thing at a time, I guess. Secondly, the more I make myself aware of the tragedies of cruelty to animals, the more I think the eating of meat and meat products is not the right choice for me. There are probably hundreds of other great reasons to stop, and as the time goes by, I intend to educate myself on the topic. There is a special diet suggested by my Dr. called the Mediterranean Plan, which is based upon eating little to no meats and made up mostly of fruits, vegetables and grains. Gradually, we have been making the conversion, but are not quite there all the way. I have also thought about shoes, purses, belts and so on. I have not used a leather purse in ages. Shoes: I still have leather shoes. However, most recently, the shoes I have purchased are not leather, and I wear Vans all summer, which are canvas, and I also love those Croc shoes, made of vinyl. I don't wear belts. So, for me, that is not a difficult change. For many years, I have been careful about cosmetics and other items like that to be sure they are not tested on animals. So, I think we are off to a pretty good start.

You guys can SO totally make this change. Keep doing what you're already doing, making little changes as you're comfortable. It has never been easier to be vegetarian. Plus, with the internet there are a billion really good resources. Here are a couple:

www.goveg.com (recipes, tips, info)

www.thevegetariansite.com (I've bought a couple of pairs of vegetarian shoes and a belt from this site, and I love them)

Good luck and have fun with this! It's an exciting process (in my opinion).

Thanks Jeff! I liked what you aaid about making little changes. As with anything, one day at a time. A really good thing is that I LOVE eating fruits, veggies, pasta, beans, nuts, berries and grains. Have you tried steel-cut oatmeal? It is stinkin' good, and I try to eat that every morning, have been for a couple of years. Gracious' for the links.

Oh, we DO have a great co-op market close by that sells organic and animal friendly eggs and milk, and yogurt. It's operated by Amish folks, but I am really pissed off at them for what they do with puppy mills, so it's a tough thing. How can they be so nice to their chickens and cows, but so cruel to the dogs? I just don't get it. Ta ta for now...OC
