The City of Chippewa Falls is considering banning smoking in all public spaces, just as Eau Claire and Menomonie have adopted in recent months.
So, what do you think of this?
Personally, I am a non-smoker. In the winter months, it gets pretty "blue" at the tavern we frequent. In the remaining seasons, the doors and windows are open, and there is also an out door deck, so there is really no issue. I don't see smoking as a right. I view smoking as a choice. That said, if you choose to go to a place that does not allow smoking, NO SMOKING. If you choose to go to a place that DOES allow smoking, then smoke. Same for folks who are non-smokers.
Are there more smokers than non-smokers? Have the taverns, and bars, and restaurants in Minnesota, Eau Claire and Menomonie lost business and closed because smoking is not permitted?
I think we can all agree on one thing. SMOKING and SECOND HAND SMOKE KILLS. The facts back it up. No discussion...no arguements. IT is TRUE.
When I come home from a place that has smoking, I always take a shower to get the smell off my hair and body.
It's a pretty big topic in CF, so we'll see how it all unfolds.

I always have to check my anger on this topic. Smoking killed my dad. I agree that it is a choice, although a difficult one for people who are addicted and want to quit. I do think that smoking should be banned in public spaces, and definitely should be illegal around children. We know now that there are many health problems that children can develop from exposure to 2nd-hand smoke. When we were growing up second hand smoke was literally everywhere. Even hospitals. Hard to fathom now.
The U of MN's Crookston campus just became completely smoke free, and I bet it won't be long before the whole U system follows. I am sure this angers a lot of people.
I have never smoked, nor have I ever wanted to, but I worked in a bar for 20 years. Personally, I think any bar should have the right to dictate what legal activity can happen inside the walls of their business. That gives the customer the right to choose to visit that establishment or not. If a bar owner thinks he/she can make more money as a smoke free venue, then GREAT! Go for it!
But it should be up to the owner, and not the government to make that choice.
AS A BAR OWNER I AGREE WIT JAY
