Today at work, someone came to the counter asking what an elderly woman in his church group could do about having the City repair some electrical wiring which was necessary to avoid a citation and fine.
He stated the woman was 60-ish (gosh, some humor here...I am nearly 55 and would not think of 60 as elderly, but...what the heck), had little to no savings, and was very upset about the situation.
This got me to thinking about how we treat each other, and what we EXPECT our government to do for us. For most folks, the idea of LESS government is more palatable than more.
What ever happened to families helping one another? What about this person's church family? Is there not an electrician as a parishoner who could donate some of his or her time and materials to help this woman rather than come begging for funding at City Hall or worse yet, asking that the citation for safe wiring be revoked? This woman deserves to live in a safe environment, afterall.
I'm not saying it would be wrong for the City to help, if it could. What I am saying is that there is an entire population of folks, and an ever growing attitude that we should not help ourselves and our neighbors.
I'm just saying...
